Chiropractic in a nutshell

Chiropractic is a health care profession aimed at correcting and restoring the natural movement of the joints of our spine and extremities. When joints of our spine do not move properly they can alter the function of the nerves that control how our brain and spinal cord communicates with the rest of our body. Abnormal spinal movement can negatively can irritate or compress the nerves that exit our spinal cord which can result in a variety of symptoms including headaches, neck and back pain, numbness, decreased balance, vertigo, and digestive problems - just to name a few. These spinal and extremity misalignments can be the result of improper posture, sedentary working patterns, repetitive or sustained postures, cumulative injuries you've sustained throughout your life or simply the result of physical de-conditioning. Chiropractor refer to improper joint position as a 'subluxation'.

Subluxation explained

A subluxation is not merely a biomechanical or structural "misalignment." Spinal joints, the soft tissue structures that surround them, and the nerves themselves carry an incredible amount of information to the brain to help regulate how the nervous system functions. This information is called 'afferentation'. Abnormal joint position will decrease this afferention. This hypersensitivity can result in altered neurological function to any part of the body. A subluxation can cause muscle spasm or atrophy, pain and inflammation, altered organ function, and can be the underlying cause of many chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
